A Journal of the Plague Year runs to some 95,000 words and contains no chapters or internal subdivisions of any kind. It is only loosely sequential, and this more often at the beginning than later on. To make the work accessible to modern readers, we have divided it into thirty-four manageable episodes of between fifteen and twenty minutes each. Because the episodes are artificial divisions, it follows that the names given each episode are solely for rapid reference; they do not appear in the work itself. Here and there throughout the text we have omitted certain passages in the interest of time, and when doing so did not harm the narrative flow of the work as a whole.
